Join me as I tell you the reasons for past book bans, give examples of censorship occurring right now, and explain why attempts to limit access to information need to be stopped. A democracy cannot survive without the freedom to read. I don't plan on giving up the democracy I love without a fight.
Many countries including the US have found Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Christopher Robin and friends controversial. The reasons are-well-fascinating.
Malala Yousafzai is a champion for girl's education. Her advocacy for learning has not only gotten her book, I AM MALALA, banned, it almost ended her life.
The powers of the rock in Sylvester and the Magic Pebble was not enough to keep this book from getting banned.
No doubt you're familiar with Garth Williams' artwork in Stuart Little, Charlotte's Webb and Little House on the Prairie books. You may not know he also illustrated his own titles and that his The Rabbits' Wedding sparked a controversy which is being talked about (look up the play) to this very day.
Zhao Zheng (also called Shi Huangdi), was the first Emperor of Unified China. He was also the first well-documented ruler to use his power--including his military--to limit information and ban books. The story of his reign is one we should all know and learn from.
Book bans are on the rise. If you don't believe me, here are the facts and figures and information about when calls for book bans in the United States spiked. Spoiler alert--the term CRT was involved. Spoiler alert #2- it's not what the people using that term as an excuse to ban books say.
